The Signs of Spring

Published by dunappaloosa at 8:55 am under Weather Edit This

The signs of spring are popping up all over the place at my house. The horses are starting to shed and the bad part is we have one mostly white one so that means little white hairs every where! The chickens are laying way more eggs and the ducks and geese are looking for nesting spots. Maybe I’ll get lucky and have a few little chicks and ducklings soon.  I’m going to order some standard Cochin pullets this year and I hope that in the future they will set a few nests. Another sign that spring is near is that the nights are staying warmer and we don’t need to fire up the wood stove every single night. And an ever better sign is when I don’t have to do my late night water trough ice breaking checks any more.

One of the worse signs that Spring is on the way is the wind. I love spring, and I’d love the wind much better if I had a wind powered electric generation system in place. But I really hate the dust and grit in my eyes and teeth.  One good thing about the wind is that a lot of the manure magically disappears. The wind dries out the horse manure, the chickens pick it apart into tiny pieces,  and then it just floats off into space.

So what do you all use as your signs that Spring is on it’s way?

    Terri,
What Kind of fruit trees are you getting? I’ve got two apples, one peach, two pears, and one mulberry. I’m going to get one more apple tree, one more peach tree and a dwarf pomagranete bush this year.

PS If you have a chance drop by early tomorrow morning for Tomorrow’s blog, you might like it.
