Clipping Bunny toenails

Published by dunappaloosa at 8:50 am under The Critters Edit This

Clipping rabbit toenails is a necessary thing to learn if you are going to own caged or indoor rabbits. I just finished clipping Fluffanutter’s nails this evening. You first need your bunny to be used to being handled. The best way I have found to clip the toenails is to have two people for the job. One person will hold the bunny and keep it’s mind occupied. The other person quickly clips the nails. We hold Fluffanutter so that she’s on her back with her toes up. Keith holds her by the scruff of the neck and pets her head.

I use the dog’s nail clippers on Fluffanutter also. As with dogs, if the nail is white, you often see the area where the “quick” is located in pink inside the nail. NEVER cut into the pink “quick” area. This will cause bleeding and a very upset bunny. If you are not sure be safe and leave a bit of room between the “quick” and your nippers. However, you should always have some blood stop powder on hand just in case you do get to close.
