Busy week
Well I’ve been slacking on posting for a while because I’ve been really busy. My ducklings that I posted about earlier are now old enough and big enough to be transferred to the main duck living area. So I moved them and moved the two goslings out of the nursery area into their old area. I’ve also got 4 turkeys, and a large number of chicks in the nursery area. My turkeys include one broad breasted bronze that is scheduled to be Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, because even as young as he is, he’s already proving to be a handful. I have two Bourbon Red chicks and one Eastern Wild chick. I’m hoping these three will be hens, but when you get straight run chicks, you get a 50-50 shot. My chicks are all different breeds. I have several Jersey Giants that are huge and are in with the turkeys because they are too big to be in with the rest of the chicks. I also got Americaunas, Buff Orphingtons, Blue Wyandottes, Light Brahamas, and Sex Linked Reds. Altogether, I hope to add 20 or so new laying pullets to the flock by the end of the summer.
My garden has been growing like a weed. I’ve been harvesting kale and spinach. I also have dill, lettuce and onions ready to harvest. My peas are blooming, the carrots, beets and parsnips are growing like crazy. I’m still worried about my sweet corn. I even replanted additional seeds to see if they would sprout, but so far no luck. My Indian corn however is doing so much better. I have some left over popcorn seeds from last year and I’m going to plant them in a different area this year and see how well they grow again. If I can’t get the sweet corn to grow, I’ll just keep the seeds from the Indian corn and the popcorn and keep growing those instead. My beans and squash are looking good. The potatoes in the tires are also doing well. I’ve got tomato plants well started and I hope to start harvesting tomatoes soon.
I’ve also been working on a couple of crochet projects. One is a small blanket for my 2-year-old nephew and one is a pretty pink and lavender scarf that is a surprise for someone in my family. I’ve got to get them finished so I can get started on some of my Christmas presents.
I’ve been busy trying to keep up with the gardening and the new chicks. I’ve also been preparing a statement to make at the NAIS listening session coming up next week in Albuquerque. I’ll put out a whole new post on that deal. So what’s everyone else been up to lately?
